About the Author

Tölögön Kasymbekov (January 15, 1931 – July 11, 2011) was one of the most prominent figures in 20th-century Kyrgyz literature. Born in the village of Ichke-Jol in the Toktogul District of Kyrgyzstan, Kasymbekov graduated from the Philological Faculty of the Kyrgyz National University in 1957. He began his career as an editor for literary journals and children’s publishing houses before establishing himself as a master of historical fiction.

Kasymbekov achieved national and international acclaim for introducing deep historical realism to Kyrgyz prose. His seminal epic, The Broken Sword (Сынган кылыч), alongside works like Kelkel and Zaurman, courageously explored complex historical epochs, national identity, and political intrigue under feudalism and Russian imperial expansion.

Beyond his literary output, Kasymbekov served as a Deputy in the Supreme Soviet of the Kyrgyz SSR and the Zhogorku Kengesh (Kyrgyz Parliament), advocating for cultural preservation and national sovereignty. Awarded the prestigious title of Hero of the Kyrgyz Republic, Kasymbekov remains a foundational voice in Central Asian historical prose.
