About This Book
In the autumn of 2001, eleven-year-old Esther leaves Semipalatinsk with her mother and moves to Denmark. Behind her she leaves her father, her native language, and the life in which she was still known as Esya. In Aarhus, she must learn to inhabit a new world: to speak in unfamiliar words, to navigate friendships and loss, and to reconcile the fragments of who she was with who she is becoming. Years later, she will discover that the past cannot simply be left behind with a slam of a door. It changes shapes, settles beneath the skin, and endures. While her mother struggles to hold their fragile new life through hard work and silence, Esther searches for her own way of belonging. At her side she has Lilya, a friend who masks her wounds with laughter, memories of her absent father, the constellations above a foreign city, and a mysterious man in a grey beret who appears at moments of profound inner transformation. Whether he is real or a manifestation of the self that Esther cannot yet name remains uncertain. Spanning the years from childhood to adulthood, “Silence Knows First” is a deeply intimate coming-of-age novel about memory, migration, and the enduring bond between mother and daughter. It explores the hidden lives we carry within us and the ways silence can speak when words fail. At its heart, it is a novel about what remains after departure, loss and after everything that could be said has already been spoken.
